Application Process

GUIDELINES FOR MEMBERS / ASSOCIATES SPONSORING
CANDIDATES FOR CLUB MEMBERSHIP

  1. An “Application for Membership” Form must be completed by each candidate jointly with his/her Nominator and Seconder. In addition to personal information regarding the candidate, the Application Form requires the Nominator and Seconder to list three Referees (either members of the Club or people of high integrity or reputation) he/she has approached and who have agreed to support the application. The Membership Committee places particular store on sponsors’ personal and social knowledge, as distinct from business, trade or professional awareness of the candidate.
  2. In the normal course, following receipt of the Application Form the Club will request the Nominator, the Seconder and the three Referees to complete questionnaires, seeking inter alia their opinions as regards the applicant’s personal qualities and suitability for Club membership.
  3. Members, in any of the foregoing roles sponsoring candidates for membership, have a very important responsibility to ensure that only unquestionably worthy persons are put forward. The Club will, in fact, hold these sponsors, the Nominator particularly, broadly responsible for the candidate’s conduct in the Club, if admitted to membership. It therefore behoves sponsors to be very objective in appraising candidates; the Club must rely on sponsors to ensure that the standard of new entrants is maintained at the highest possible level.
  4. The Nominator and the Seconder must be over the age of 21 years and have been playing members of the Club for more than four years.
  5. For all classes of membership other than Juniors, immediate family members, including family by marriage may nominate or second a candidate for Club membership but not both. No family restriction will apply to nominating or seconding candidates for Junior membership.
  6. The Club will not communicate directly with a candidate until he/she is elected to membership. Communication will be through the Nominator, whose responsibility it is to monitor his/her candidate’s application.
  7. If a candidate fails to be elected to membership by the General Committee, the Nominator will be notified accordingly but the reason for decline of membership shall remain confidential to the Committee.
